How To Wear Your Hair At The Gym

Finding time to go to the gym can be tough enough, who wants to worry about how to style their hair falling out of place when you are looking to focus on your training and achieving fitness goals.

Wearing your hair down at the gym can be uncomfortable, extra sweaty and it can accumulate sweat on the tips of your hair causing potential damage. Products can also more easily sweat into your skin this way, causing blocked pores. Not to mention other people’s sweat from unwiped machines is always a risk if you wear your hair down.

Here are our top recommendations for hairstyles while at the gym!

Slicked Ponytail

This is a go-to for most women. Get the hair up and out of the way without too much hassle or styling. If you’re looking for that perfectly slicked back, zero flyaways, type of ponytail here is a quick how-to:

  1. Brush your hair to get out any knots and smooth it down.
  2. Optional: Straightening your hair makes it less puffy and easier to slick.
  3. Apply a small amount of gel to the hairline to get that ‘slicked’ appearance.
  4. Use a smoothing brush, or small comb, to tame any flyaways.
  5. Use a Strongband™️ hair tie to hold perfectly in place.
  6. Use an eyebrow comb to slick back any stray baby hairs (use some more gel is necessary).

Low Buns

We love buns because they get all of your hair out of the way, and it's super quick to rock as a polished tight low bun or messy bun when you’re in a rush. Your hair isn’t swinging back and forth as you run and or get into a HIIT workout. Buns are also nice and feminine and can make you look more polished, even when you’re super sweaty at the gym.

Low Space Buns

These are adorable! They are also perfect for when you are doing yoga or any type of mat work and want to be able to lay the back of your head on the ground or a towel. To get the perfect space buns follow these simple steps:

  1. Brush your hair to get out any knots and smooth it down.
  2. Divide your hair down the middle using a comb.
  3. Tie up one side and get it out of the way.
  4. Take the other side and loosely twist all the way down to the ends.
  5. Now use the twisted hair to wrap up into a bun shape.
  6. Use your Strongband™️ hair tie to then wrap around the bun to secure it into place.
  7. Repeat this process on the other side.

You can mix up your scrunchie colours, or match. Either way, you are going to look great while you sweat it out, never having to worry about your buns coming loose or falling out during your workout.

Low Middle Bun

This is the exact same concept as the low space bins, but just one big bun at the base of your skull. Gather all of the hair, twist, and wrap up into a bun shape. Our Hairstrong Strongband™ will secure that bad boy to last you all day.

You can also do a slicked-bun look by combining the slick ponytail steps and the bun steps. Get that hair out of your face! This also helps reduce the risk of your hair getting caught in any machinery - we’ve seen it happen and it’s never pretty. Safety first, tie it up!

Side Braids

We love buns because your hair gets way less sweaty as the sweat drips down the part and away from the hair. Plus they can cause adorable waves. Add some dry shampoo and not one will even know you had an intense gym session that morning.

To get the perfect french braids:

  1. Brush your hair to get out any knots and smooth it down.
  2. Part your hair down the middle using a comb.
  3. Tie up the side you are not working on yet to get it out of the way.
  4. To begin the brain, take a small section of about .5 inches of hair from your hairline. Divide this section into three strands. Make the foundation braid by starting a standard braid.
  5. Add a small section of loose hair to the right strand. Cross the right strand over the middle strand while pulling the middle strand to the right.
  6. Add a small section of loose hair to the left strand. Cross the left strand over the new middle strand while pulling the middle strand to the left.
  7. Repeat until you run out of hair to add to the strands.
  8. Finish the braid off and tip up with your Strongband™️ hair tie.

Another great option is once you run out of hair at the base of your skull. Instead of finishing off the rest of your hair in a braid, twist and wrap it up into a bun. This gets your hair completely out of your hair and with a Hairstrong scrunchie, it will be super secure. This is a great hairstyle if you need to wear a hat or any protective head equipment.

Whether you like your hair up as tight as possible or prefer a looser feel. Hairstrong’s hair ties are the perfect fit for any type of hair and athlete. It doesn’t pull and damage your hair. You can trust it to keep your hair exactly where you want it.

Perfect Ponyback Pairing

One of the best ways to keep your hair out of your hair and under control in the gym is to wear a hat. Ponyback hats are our absolute favourite as their sleek design comes with a larger slit up the back that uses magnets to open and close. Finally, there is a way to wear a high ponytail or bun with your hat.  Pair the Ponyback with your Hairstrong Strongband™ and your hair is guaranteed to go nowhere.
