Common Curly Hair Mistakes

Curly hair definitely takes a bit more love than other hair types. While straight and wavy-haired girls have their own struggles, curly and coily haired ladies have their hands full. If you’re looking for some tips on how to get bouncy, frizz-free coily hair we’ve compiled a list of top tips to follow.

Stop Overwashing Curly Hair

Curls can dry out very quickly. The more shampooing you do the dryer your curly hair / coily hair and scalp will be, no matter the amount of conditioner you use. Slowly try and add time in between shampoos. Try washing every other day and work your way up to washing once or twice a week. If you are an athlete this might seem dirty. So ensure you are still washing your body and rinsing off. Dry shampoo can come in handy while your scalp is adjusting to the excess oils. Over time your hair won’t become as greasy as quickly.

Moisturize & Nourish Curls

Since curly and textured hair is more prone to drying out, conditioner and oils should be your best friend! The more hydrated your curls, the shinier and bouncier they will look. There are a few different curly hair formulas that we highly recommend, such as:

  • Briogeo Curl Charisma leave-in conditioner: This leave-in conditioner does not leave your curls feeling crunchy or stiff, rather keeps them moisturized all day long. This is possible thanks to avocado oil and rice amino acids. Smoothing from root to tip!
  • Fable & Man Smoothing Serum: Finding a go-to serum is a lifesaver, especially in the dry winter months. This oil can calm and soothe your scalp, keeping your curls hydrated. This serum doesn’t feel greasy or heavy.

When looking for hair products for curly hair, try to keep it natural. Look for ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil, and aloe vera.

If you’re in a rush make sure to NEVER skip out on conditioner even if you don’t have time to use products after your shower.

Apply Products Immediately After Shower

One of the biggest mistakes you can make with long curly hair is waiting too long after your shower to apply products. The sooner you are able to set your curls the better they will look. If you apply products while your hair is still damp, frizz has not yet had the chance to creep in. Work the product from the tips to the root of your hair. Never brush or rake through curls as this can damage them and cause them to lose their natural shape.

Use A Diffuser

If you want to speed up the drying process you can go ahead and use a diffuser attachment for your blow dryer. Try to limit the amount of heat and air used. Use the diffuser and blow dry up into the curls, not downwards. The diffuser is controlling the air while it drys, creating less frizz as the hair is not flying everywhere. For the best results, try and let your curls air-dry for as long as possible before whipping out the diffuser.

Protect Hair While You Sleep

One of our last tips to leave you with is to protect your curls while you sleep. This will be majorly beneficial for almost any hair type, but particularly for textured hair. Cotton pillowcases are particularly damaging as it soaks up all of your hair’s natural oils as you sleep. Try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf, or sleep on a silk pillowcase. You will almost certainly notice how your hair is keeping its shine longer and has become easier to keep hydrated.

Our Strongband adjustable scrunchies are also a tool to use in order to reduce damage to your curls. Regular hair ties are extremely damaging to any hair texture. The elastic band cuts directly into the hair shaft. This is why we see that dent in our hair after having it tied up. The elastic is slicing into the outer layer of hair, causing breakage and frizzing.

With a scrunchie, you are protecting your hair from the damage of an elastic hair time. This is why we made our scrunchies adjustable so women can trust them to support their hair, as well as elastics, do. Reverse years of hair damage and grab yourself one of our adjustable scrunchies that come in 3 different sizes.

The Extra Tough Strongband is for our thick, long curly haired friends as it is able to support a large amount of hair. The Original Strongband works on all hair types from straight thin hair to thick coily hair. And finally, our Nano Tough Strongband is a bit lighter for thin and fine hair, or for different hairstyles such as the half pony or at the end of braids.

At Hairstrong we are passionate about keeping your hair healthy! Ditch damaging hair ties and enjoy the healthy long curly hair that you deserve with our adjustable scrunchies. Check out our Instagram page and shop our collection of Strongbands.
